Curtain Sew-A-Thon Success

— Posted by dale @ 09:21

I'm late in entering the status of the event, but for those who didn't have a chance to attend...it was a great success!!

We had more than 20 volunteers and totally completed the project - 30 pairs of curtains for the Domestic Violence Shelter!  It was great fun and we even made the paper. (News Press, May 18th, page 3 ... a half page photo story).

No current plans for any other events, but should an opportunity arise...we'll let you know.

There are still some pillow cases that need to be made for the Children's Hospital in LA and my offer still holds.  Come in and make a pillow case (free lesson and instructions to take home)!

That's it for now.

"Shelter Sew-a-thon" to benefit Domestic Violence Solutions

— Posted by dale @ 10:12

Can you sew a reasonably straight seam?  Please donate your time to make curtains for the Domestic Violence Solutions Emergency Shelter on Sunday, May 17, at the The Sewing Parlour, 1333 De La Vina Street, Suite A.  The parlour will be open from 10:00 to sew café curtains for thirty windows.  Pam Vestal, sewing instructor for SBCC Adult Education, and I will supervise the volunteers.

Voltunteers are needed to help sew the curtains.  We need participants to help sew for 2 hours.  We'll have 3 two hour shifts throughout the day (10 - 12, 12 - 2, and 2 - 4).

Call the parlour, email, or comment here to reserve your space. Help a good cause and hone your sewing skills at the same time!

Domestic Violence Solutions is the only agency in Santa Barbara County focused solely on ending domestic violence.  Last year they provided confidential shelter to 311 women and children, personal counseling to 910 individuals and phone assistance to 1,091 people who called the 24-hour crisis hotlines. Their trained advocates responded to 582 "9-1-1" domestic violence calls with law enforcement officers and educated more than 1,500 junior high and high school teens about healthy relationship skills and how to recognize and avoid violence in their relationships. Domestic Violence Solutions works to save lives every day.  Call 963-4458 for more information about DVS.

New class series: Let's make ...

— Posted by dale @ 09:03

We're really excited to offer a new class series featuring the world of home decor.  Let your creative juices flow and make your home truly and uniquely YOU!  Doing your own custom interior decorations can be extremely economical and easy.  Anyone with basic sewing skills can create beautiful home accents.

The classes will be held every other Saturday morning (beginning April 25) and will include:  Let's make...decorative pillows, Let's make...curtains, Let's make ... duvet covers, and much more.

The majority of the sessions consist of demonstrations with numerous samples and will be packed full of "how to" information. In the afternoons, following the demos, there will be an optional class (limited to 5 participants) where you can actually begin construction on your new home decor project under our guidance.

Watch for our special "Let's make ... pillow cases a combined "kick off" and charitable event. More information coming later today.  Stay tuned!

Have a suggestion for a class?  Let us know and let's make it happen!

Welcome!

Here is the anchor post of our new 'Sewing Parlour Blog'.

Over time we will be adding additional categories so that we can exchange ideas on different sewing related topics.

Ultimately our hope is that we can 'open' this blog so that 'Interested Sewers' can participate, adding questions and comments to the blog topics.

For now - please feel free to send us a note (see the 'Contact' menu on the right or use the 'Comment' option below) to let us know your thoughts - and provide suggestions for categories and topics that you would be interested in seeing.

Thanks!

 Dale.
